CENTRAL AREA MASTERPLAN
How do you build community in a place that prides itself on the diversity of its residents?
The Central Area Master Plan is the culmination of a year-long planning process to create a shared vision for Central Area neighborhoods. Through a community driven process, residents, business owners, community advocates, and numerous other stakeholders offered their perspective on the current state of the neighborhood as well as their dreams for the future.
The planning process came at a critical time for the Central Area. After decades of decline there is a palpable sense of momentum in the neighborhood. New residents and businesses are adding energy to the area that hasn’t been felt in a long time, yet significant challenges remain. Things like public health, housing affordability, and access to jobs are all issues that came to light out of the planning process.
¿Cómo se construye una comunidad y simultáneamente se celebra la diversidad de sus residentes?
El Plan Estratégico del Área Central es la culminación de un proceso de planificación para crear una visión compartida de los vecindarios del Área Central a lo largo de un año. A través de un proceso impulsado por la comunidad, los residentes, empresarios, representantes vecinales y otras partes interesadas ofrecieron su perspectiva sobre el estado actual del vecindario y sus sueños para el futuro.
El proceso de planificación llegó en un momento crítico para el Área Central. Tras décadas de deterioro, los nuevos residentes y comercios están aportando una energía a la zona que no se percibía desde hacía mucho tiempo, aunque siguen existiendo importantes retos. Temas como la salud pública, la asequibilidad de la vivienda y el acceso al empleo son cuestiones que han salido a la luz en este proceso.
El Área Central siempre ha albergado una diversidad de culturas que se remonta a los primeros inmigrantes europeos, continuó con el crecimiento dd la comunidad latina y, más recientemente, se consolidó con la llegada de inmigrantes del sudeste asiático y África.
Esta rica diversidad ha colocado al Área Central en una posición única en la región de Kansas City. A lo largo del proceso de planificación, los residentes expresaron la importancia de preservar la diversidad del Área Central y, al mismo tiempo, fortalecer el sentido de comunidad unida.
The Central Area has always been a community with a diverse mix of cultures dating back to the early European immigrants, continued with the decade’s long influx of Latino Americans, and further solidified with more recent immigrants from Southeast Asia and Africa.
This rich diversity has placed the Central Area in a unique position in the Kansas City region. Throughout the planning process, residents expressed the importance of maintaining the Central Area’s diversity all while enhancing a unified sense of community.
Strategies around open space, commercial corridors, housing, and mobility were all grounded in how best to build a sense of community and help residents better interact with each other.
Las estrategias en torno a los espacios abiertos, los corredores comerciales, la vivienda y la movilidad se basaron en formas de ayudar a los residentes a interactuar más colectivamente.
In order for the plan to be a useful document for the neighborhood in the coming decade, it needed to be accessible to the whole community. With the support of the Unified Government, the entire plan was translated into Spanish to better serve the Spanish speaking residents of the Central Area.
The plan was recognized by the Kansas chapter of the American Planning Association for the 2021 Meadowlark Award which recognizes an individual, project, or program creating greater awareness of the value of planning to improve a community’s quality of life.
Para que el plan fuera un documento útil para el vecindario en la próxima década, debía ser accesible para toda la comunidad. Con el apoyo del Gobierno Unificado, todo el plan se tradujo al español para servir mejor a los residentes hispanohablantes del Área Central.
El plan fue reconocido por la sección de Kansas de la Asociación Americana de Planificación con el Premio Meadowlark 2021, que reconoce a un individuo, proyecto o programa que crea una mayor conciencia del valor de la planificación para mejorar la calidad de vida de una comunidad
